On almost every non-trivial project I've worked on we've had to roll our own batch tracking for background jobs. Sidekiq and Sidekiq Pro have been awesome for Staq. We're doing a punishing amount of work on Heroku with them and are able to use a very small number of dynos. The batch feature ends up being extremely useful - once we got it going for one worker, we wanted batches everywhere.
