Background info for hosting ODK - rpguiteras/IRES-Water-Pricing GitHub Wiki
From Chinmay 202-03-13:
I've looked into a few of the basic differences between some of the options that Dr. Guiteras outlined above. I'm not sure how to estimate the size of our survey, so I used the Integrated Household Survey linked on the GitHub as an estimation. Based on that and this formula, we shouldn't need more than ~25 GB for the data (as long as there are no pictures/video/audio).
Going off of the same survey, one laptop with an internet connection and a set of GPS-enabled tablets should be enough. We might also want to consider investing in portable battery packs for the survey takers to use if they don't have access to electricity in certain areas.
This would theoretically fit into the free tier on AWS, but it might be tight once we install all of the supporting ODK software. Microsoft Azure looks to cost roughly the same as Digital Ocean but it doesn't have as much support on ODK's end.
As such, I think we would be best served by getting a free (or cheap) domain name and either the $12, 18, or 24/month DigitalOcean plans to host our server. Setting up our own server is possible, but I'm not sure how cheaply we could get the hardware. Additionally, there might be an issue with access if it's running on NCSU's network, but we could probably figure this out down the line.
