The Media Type WordPress Taxonomy allows Librarians to specify what kind of media an Item is. Book would be the most common media type of most libraries. Unlike Authors, Items can only be assigned one Media Type. Three Media Types as automatically created on plugin installation: Book, DVD and Graphic Novel. These can be deleted, modified or added to without causing disruption to any core plugin functionality.

Certain Media Types allow additional Item meta to be saved. Specifying the Media Type Book allows meta such as the Item's ISBN number to be entered. Changing an Item's Media Type causes all meta associated with the previous Media Type to be deleted when the Item is saved/published/updated.
