Readings

How do you consider the relationship between the social and technological, today and in the future? What is your vision for the internet? What is the difference between working on a digital medium and working within it? These readings are optional, but well worth the read.

2. Olia Lialina, Vernacular Web 1 & Alexander R. Galloway, Jodi's Infrastructure

(Note: the Vernacular Web is a multi-page article) We'll talk more this week about what it means to design for the web. What does its aesthetics convey? Also, think about your existing work. Whether or not your practice is in a digital medium, how does your work stand in relation to it?

1. Paul Ford, What is Code? & Louise Drulhe, Critical Atlas of Internet

Don’t worry about understanding the technical aspects or the code mentioned in the What Is Code article, but think about the implications on people and environments surrounding code. Full reading (while encouraged) is optional. Required sections are the following:

  • Chapter 1: The Man in the Taupe Blazer
  • Chapter 2: Let’s Begin
  • Chapter 5: The Time You Attended the E-mail Address Validation Meeting
  • Chapter 6.5: And Now for Something Beautiful

Read all of the Critical Atlas of the Internet and create a graphic reading response for the web for class next week.
