FT 991A Power Settings across Bands and Modes - rfrht/FT-991A GitHub Wiki

Are you a FT-991/A owner? Got puzzled on why some power settings that you made that were overridden?

Well, I was. Plenty of times.

Until I finally took a investigative approach and went to find out what are variables involving the power settings.

First, under the power perspective, the radio has two main groups: Frequencies and modes. And there are lots of sharing between them. Keep reading.

Frequency-wise, the radio is organized in 4 groups:

  • The HF band (1.8-28 MHz);
  • 50 MHz;
  • 144 MHz
  • 430 MHz.

In terms of modes, we have three groups:

  • Data LSB/USB, RTTY LSB/USB, Data FM, C4FM, FM, CW LSB/USB;
  • LSB/USB
  • AM

How does that translate?

The FM, Digitals and CW all share the same power setting in its respective band group; LSB/USB and AM has its setting of its own also in its respective band group.

See a few examples.

  • If you change your power in LSB mode in 7 MHz, this power setting will be the same for all HF bands for both LSB and USB, and will not reflect in 50, 144 and 430 in SSB mode;
  • If you change your 50 MHz in FM mode, this setting will replicate to Data LSB/USB, RTTY LSB/USB, Data FM, C4FM, FM and CW LSB/USB - but only in the 50 MHz band, and will not replicate in any other band
  • 144 and 430 MHz does not share power levels: They have their own settings too.
