Installing Manufacturer Cleanish Rom - retrogamehandheld/powkiddyx GitHub Wiki
Note that this procedure also applies to both the PowKiddy X15 and X18, but each uses a different ROM file as specified
Before starting this process you MUST make a complete backup using the guide linked below! Otherwise you may be unable to recover your bricked device!
Backing up Partitions
Special notes:
- Make sure you completed the backup process first.
- This ROM is called "Clean-Ish" because it came from the manufacturer, and while it's significantly less bloated than the stock PowKiddy ROM, and has Play Store, it may not be 100% clean to some people's standards. It's still a dramatic improvement and makes the device very usable.
- On linux systems, modemmanager conflicts with linux version of SPFlash. Use your package manager to uninstall it and reinstall it after you're done .
- Make sure you have a good, solid, stable USB cable for the entirety of this process. If your USB cable, or USB port, is at all unreliable, switch to a different one before starting.
- Make sure you have completed your partition backup process before starting! This is not a typo, it's important enough for us to remind you three times.
Install Procedure
- Download the Clean-Ish ROM files from here:
- Extract the files
- Open the SPFlash Tool (download here), and select the scatter file named KMT8163_EMMC_h55_mt8163_60_n_ForSW - Copy.txt in "Step 3 - Flash\Clean Rom" . Make sure all the entries listed have a file selected.
- unplug your device and make sure it's powered off
- In SP Flash Tools, select Firmware Upgrade, and Download
- NOW, plug in your device. You should see the device connect and a progress bar along the bottom of the SPFlash window.
- When the flash is completed, unplug your device and reboot
- This reboot step should take a long while. You should see an animated version of the logo on the back of the screen while it's working.
- Eventually you'll boot to the OS. Immediately shut down.
- Go back to SP Flash Tools, unselect everything, and change the boot image file to the one located in the Rooted Boot subfolder of your ZIP file (magisk_patched.img)
- Download this file to your device (do not use firmware upgrade this time)
- Disconnect your device and reboot
