On June 26th, 2020, the certificate that backs connections to https://device.mobile.tesco.com/ expired. This causes all Tesco provided updates for Hudl 1 to fail to be served from this back end. On factory re-set the Hudl 1 setup wizard requires an update check to this back-end to complete successfully ... as this check fails, the wizard blocks, requesting the user to check their internet connection. There is a more detailed write up of the issue on Rob's site.
In Spring 2023 the application running on the server at https://device.mobile.tesco.com/ started serving HTTP 500 (Internal Server Error) responses to all requests, and so these instructions for a work around that didn't require flashing new software to the Hudl 1 stopped working.
This leaves flashing a new firmware image to your Hudl 1 as the only known route for recovery. Here are the instructions for getting going again with the TMF Custom ROM - a modified firmware for your Hudl 1 device:
- The easiest and recommended way: Flashing from an SD Card
- Flashing from a Windows Computer using RockChip Batch Tool
- Flashing from any Computer using a bootable USB Flash Drive

What this custom firmware does
- Removes the annoying start-up sound, and adds branding to the start-up splashscreen so that it's easy to tell that this modified firmware is installed.
- Disables the Setup Wizard, so that on first boot you end up directly at the desktop. There are a few post install steps that you should take.
- Removes the non-functional and Tesco branded apps (those that still work can be re-installed from the Play Store if you want them)
- Removes the [T] Tesco launcher button from the navigation bar
Additional details on the changes made are available here.
