If you are here, you have probably gone through some of the tutorials, then decided to try doing something for yourself, and found that you were frustrated with what, to you, seems like it should be a simple process and you just can't get it to work. Relax. I've been there.
I consider myself a decent programmer with a good knowledge of HL7, XML and a reasonably high threshold for pain, and yet I was frustrated. I saw the demos and knew that Mirth was the answer to all my HL7 and IHE woes, but I couldn't seem to get it to work the way I needed it to. That's the reason for this topic.
First, if you have a budget, spend it on WebReach training and consulting. They are VERY good and will get you up to speed faster than anything else. AND you can use what you learn through looking at their work to maintain and expand your system. But what if you DON'T have a budget?
I was fortunate to be able to get a bit of help from WebReach after having spent a bunch of time wandering around in the Mirth wilderness. A small number of tips sent me in the right direction and that threshold for pain made it possible for me to burst back into civilization. I was able to go to an IHE connectathon and survive. My messages flowed and transformed. I was a hero, carried about on the shoulders of everyone there (OK, not the last).
I am going to take what I have learned and put it into a structure that will, hopefully, help you find your way to Mirth heaven. This is not a replacement for complete documentation, but since that isn't available yet, this will hopefully give you a clue. Sometimes that's all we need.
The basic structure:
- A way to think about Mirth
- Setup
- Simple message receive/send
- Basic structure of Mirth
- Transformers
- Source
- Destinations
- Data coming in
- Data going out
This will be a work in progress. If there isn't a link, then I haven't had a chance to get to it yet. If there is a real need, go to the Forums. That's your second best bet (after hiring WebReach). Otherwise, welcome on board. Mirth is everything you think it is, and probably more. We just need to get you out of the woods. It'll be worth it.

Very Interesting take on the Mirth integration engine. Is there a way I can read the rest of the artical? It looks like I can only access the 1st section " A way to think about Mirth" Sure would like to read the rest.. Do let me know. Thank you... Larry N. Bates 510-815-8145
