School Roster

The school roster contains every student currently available to the indoor percussion program. The roster has a maximum capacity of 30 students.

At the beginning of each season, returning members age up, graduating seniors leave, and new freshmen and transfers join the roster.

Active Line

The active line contains the students currently assigned to an owned instrument. Students who are not assigned to an instrument remain on the roster and may be moved onto the line later. A student not playing decreases morale and skill.

The active line can be edited at any time. However, switching players around mid season will cause their skill to be limited for 1-3 weeks as they learn a new part in the show. This limit will be longer and more impactful if you switch between instruments that are not similar (e.g. glockenspiel->snare) than if you switch between similar instruments (e.g. marimba->vibraphone).

This makes pre-season assignments very important, but not impossible to change the line if necessary mid season.

One way that a player work around this is taking a 2 week break from competitions to do a camp weekend and allow players to learn their new parts before performing again.

Student

A student contains the following variables:

  • name
    • A randomly generated, editable name selected from the game's name lists.
  • gender
    • Used to select an appropriate character model and presentation details.
  • grade
    • Most students enter as freshmen and graduate after their senior season.
  • skill
    • Contains the student's current skill and maximum potential on every instrument.
  • morale
    • Represents the student's current satisfaction, motivation, and willingness to perform.
  • relationships
    • Tracks meaningful connections with other students. TBD

Their skill and morale values will be displayed when a player is selected.

Grade

Students have four possible grades:

  • Freshman
  • Sophomore
  • Junior
  • Senior

Most students will enter as freshmen and leave after their senior year. However, some new students will arrive as other grades, and some will quit before they graduate.

It is preferable that students arrive as freshmen, so you can spend all four years increasing their skill level to as high as possible.

Skill

Each instrument has a current skill value from 0.0 to 1.0.

Skill will vary based on how much practice a student is getting. Practicing a student during the week or having a camp day will increase their skill slightly.

Variables:

  • snare
  • tenor
  • bass
  • cymbal
  • marimba
  • vibraphone
  • xylophone
  • glockenspiel
  • synth
  • aux
  • drumset

Potential

Each instrument will also have a potential variable, which is a value from 0.0 to 1.0 that caps how far that student can improve on that instrument.

This variable is constant throughout the season but can increase as their grade increases.

Variables:

  • snare_potential
  • tenor_potential
  • bass_potential
  • cymbal_potential
  • marimba_potential
  • vibraphone_potential
  • xylophone_potential
  • glockenspiel_potential
  • synth_potential
  • aux_potential
  • drumset_potential

Preference

Each instrument has a preference value from 0.0 to 1.0. It is initially randomly generated (with influence from skill), but can adjust up or down based on their skill level.

Variables:

  • snare_preference
  • tenor_preference
  • bass_preference
  • cymbal_preference
  • marimba_preference
  • vibraphone_preference
  • xylophone_preference
  • glockenspiel_preference
  • synth_preference
  • aux_preference
  • drumset_preference

Morale

The morale system is one of the most important aspects of the game to manage.

Morale is a score from 0.0 - 1.0. It is based on the player's overall skill, the skill of the instrument they are currently playing, being benched, practice amount, and the group's competition results.

Examples:

  • Winning competitions will increase everyone's morale score, and losing will decrease it
  • A student being assigned to an instrument that they have a low skill on will decrease morale
    • However, this can be played as an investment, because as the student increases their skill by spending time on that instrument, their morale will increase again
  • If a student is on the roster but doesn't play through the season, their morale will heavily decrease

If morale is low, the student will perform worse at competitions. A skilled group could lose solely based on a low overall morale.

Relationships

Possible system where students build connections with their peers on surrounding instruments. Relationships will impact morale if implemented. TBD
