Item Shop Tutorial - raeleus/Hashtag-DnD GitHub Wiki
Introduction
The Item Shop is a general store that you can visit to buy mundane gear and insanely rare artifacts. This allows the game to have more control over the rarity and variety of items you purchase throughout your adventures. This contrasts with the bartering tutorial as bartering implies that the given items come from the context of the ai-driven story. These two systems should work hand-in-hand to make an awesome story!
The Scenario
You've made it to the big city. It's time to spend that life savings on the gear that will launch you into stardom:
#itemshop
You are shown a list of items, each with a number next to them.
You can make selections here and your gold will be automatically subtracted the due amount:
1
When you are satisfied with your selections, type q
to quit.
Perhaps you want to visit armorer. He has more specific types of gear worth your attention:
#itemshop armor
There are various categories of shops: default
, weapons
, armor
, tools
, gear
, common
, uncommon
, rare
, very rare
, legendary
, artifact
.
The available items change every day. You decide to sleep and check back to see if they got what you're looking for this time:
#sleep
#itemshop armor
Cut the crap, you're only here to cheat and get a specific item for free:
#itemshop armor free all
The all
keyword makes the store list all available items. Be warned, the lists for common, rare, etc. are very long!
The free
keyword reduces all the prices to free. Perhaps you have a discount or you will owe the owner a favor.
But before you go, you need to equip these new items. This is necessary for weapons and armor:
#equip greataxe
#equip breastplate
These commands automatically change your character's hit chance/damage and armor class respectively.
You are off to your adventure! After you've slain some dragons with the combat tutorial, it's time to give yourself a just reward:
#reward
This gives you a random item with diminishing chances of getting something of even higher rarity.
In fact, you really owe it to yourself to get the best of the best. Hell, make it three items:
#reward 3 legendary
This awards the character multiple items at once from the specified list. The same lists from above apply here.
The story told you that you found the legendary Club of Hope, but that's not part of random loot drop. You need to call the takeweapon command:
#takeweapon 3d6 +3 strength Club of Hope
If you don't take this step, you will not be able to use #equip
on it. The first argument is the damage and the second is the modifier to the weapon's accuracy.
And take the Trousers of Destiny while you're at it:
#takearmor 15 Trousers of Destiny
The first argument is the armor class.
#takearmor 12+d Leather Armor of Sax Appeal
Some armor adds the character's dexterity to their armor class. Use +d
to denote these.
#takearmor 14+dmax2 Half Plate of Leftovers
Some armor is even more restrictive with +dmax2
indicating that only up to two points of dex modifier count toward armor class
#takearmor +2 Shield of Smack-Talking
Shields add their bonus to another type of armor. The leading +
sign indicates this. Make sure to equip your regular armor first, then your shield.
You've done it! And it was all thanks to the support of local small businesses. Don't forget to patronize your neighborhood game store!
Additional Thoughts
All of these items are cribbed from the DnD Dungeon Master's Guide. If you like Hashtag DnD, you might as well start learning how to play the real game. So go get yourself a copy of The Player's Handbook!
Try not to reward yourself every time you defeat a monster. Realistically, most monsters don't carry loot. Think about how and why you would find some rare bracers in the stomach of a wyvern next time you go out exploring.
Don't climb the tech tree too quickly! A lot of my most memorable experiences in this game have been when I was low level and scraping by with a short sword and a few coins dangling in my pocket.
Not everything in the item shop is going to fit into your particular story thematically. Use #renameitem
to give your new weapon some personal flair.
The weapons
, armor
, tools
, and gear
lists are just mundane items. If you want variety, stick with the default store which has a chance of landing rare gear sometimes.
Any special properties listed in the store besides the damage, accuracy, or armor class must be handled by the player. Look at the combat tutorial to see how you can manually add additional damage and undo enemy turns in order to apply these effects.
