Advanced Research Computing : Globus - Support

Troubleshooting

  1. Guest collections (v4 shared endpoints)
    1. Make sure users are using their <uniqname>@umich.edu identity.  When creating a guest collection, Globus temporarily logs in as a Globus identity, NOT a Globus account.
    2. Notice in the top right the Globus identity
    3. If you are logged in as a Globus identity ending in @umich.edu, proceed with the directions on the page
    4. If not, click on your currently logged in Globus identity, sign out, and sign back in using your umich Kerberos login
      1. Incorrect Globus identities might look like [email protected] or [email protected] or [email protected]
    5. You may run into problems signing into a different Globus identity and get errors like "duplicate name".  In those cases, the easiest way to proceed is often to remove all identities from your Globus account except for your @umich.edu identity.  In the worst case scenario, create a new Globus account with <uniqname>@umich.edu as your primary identity.
  2. Globus Connect Personal Installation
    1. Make sure that users are creating an endpoint and generating a setup key before installing Globus Connect Personal. Follow the instructions at docs.globus.org

Needed Permissions

*** In order to access the umich#Flux endpoint, these are the required steps

  1. umich#Flux
  • The user will need a user login on Flux.
  • Where are they transferring their data to?
    • They will need to be in the appropriate unix group if the directory they're transferring to is not owned by them (i.e. Any storage volume, like Turbo; shared directory on an account's Scratch; etc)
  • Done. They should be able to use Globus with the umich#Flux endpoint

Glossary (for v5)

Access Manager

A user/group role (like Administrator) who controls read/write permissions for other users on a shared endpoint.

Collection (v4 Endpoint)

An interface for the user to access files.  A collection is contained within an endpoint, and accesses a subset of folders in that endpoint based on user permissions and collection attributes.

Mapped Collection (v4 Host Endpoints)

Users must have a local account on the system they are accessing.  Their Globus identity must be mapped to their local account.

Guest Collection (v4 Shared Endpoints)

Access is based on permissions granted by an Administrator or Access Manager.

Endpoint

An instance of Globus Connect Server or Globus Connect Personal serving one or multiple storage systems to users as Collections.

Endpoint Definition

Endpoint metadata.  Stored on Globus.org servers.

Globus Account

The set of a user’s linked identities in Globus. The first identity in the user’s identity set in is the primary identity, and all subsequent identities added will be linked identities.

Globus Identity

A method of authentication giving you access to any collections shared with that identity.  Usually you want to use umich kerberos, but it's possible to use google or email as an identity.

Managed Endpoint

An endpoint running the paid version of Globus Connect Server or Globus Connect Personal.

Storage Gateway

efines policies for an endpoint to access storage systems.

Steps for adding the umich#flux endpoint and finding a directory to transfer files to or from

*** This example uses Data Den as an example but the steps can be adjusted to find any directory ***

0) These steps assume the user has Globus Connect Personal (GCP) on their machine

*1) Launch GCP *

2) Select 'web: transfer files' from the drop-down menu from the icon at the top of the screen (this should appear after you launch GCP).

*3) Once the browser interface appears look for 'Transfer or Sync..' This should be in blue in the middle of the page. *

4) Choose the directory that you want to move data from by clicking on the entry field by 'Collection'.

*5) If you are wanting to move data FROM DataDen then you'll need to find the Flux endpoint. Type 'umich#flux' in this entry field. *

6) A list of Flux endpoints will show up and 'umich#flux' should be on top in grey. Click on it to proceed.

7) Clicking on 'umich#flux' will pop-up a prompt to verify credentials. to do so click the 'Continue' button.

8) The next page will show a list of Identity Providers. In the 'Search' entry field type in 'University of Michigan', check the 'Remember this selection' radio button, and click 'Log On'.

9) You will be prompted for your uniqname and password. Once this information is verified you will be redirected to Globus.

*10) Congratulations! You know have access to the Flux Globus endpoint. To get to your DataDen volume there are a few more steps. *

11) In the 'Path' entry field you should see '/~/'. Below it you should see the words 'Select All', with an up arrow next to that. Click the up arrow until you find yourself in the root directory.

12) Once in root find the nfs folder then go back down into the nfs folder until you find the DataDen directory you are looking for. You should now be able to transfer files to and from this folder.
