adding a new sw account - raeker/ARC-Wiki-Test GitHub Wiki
For the Great Lakes cluster, software is installed using service
accounts that end with sw. Those accounts are created for each person
who will install software on the GL cluster as sponsored academic
affiliates. Sponsored accounts are created from
https://mcommunity-sponsor.its.umich.edu/sponsor-tools/mySponsorships
The information you need prior to starting the sponsorship is
Full name
Full Address
Gender
Birthdate
Non-umich e-mail address
The Reason should always be 'academic affiliate' for sw accounts.
In the Notes box (which you can stretch and make bigger), put in the department/unit in which the person for whom the sw account is being created works. That will facilitate checking that they are still there in the future.
The requester should not be the same uniqname as the administrator. The
usual suspects for sw account requester are raeker and brockp.
The expiry should be set to one year, minus one day, from the date of submitting the sponsorship form.
Check the boxes for sending confirmation and uniqname to Requester and Sponsored Person.
Check all the boxes for 45-day and 14-day expiry notice. In the E-Mail box, put [email protected] to have the expiration notice sent to the software group, as they should verify that all the people with sw accounts still work here, and renew accounts for those who do. I (bennet) find that it is easiest to renew them all on the same day, even if it means renewing a few that aren't near expiration.
Begin Sponsoring button, press it now.
It will want you to pick a uniqname and search for it. You will be
well-advised to search MCommunity (or other directory if/when MC goes
away) for the proposed sw account before starting.
Once the search fails, use the button to Begin Sponsoring.
Fill in the information above for the person. Make your window tall enough to see all three sets of validation information in the right column. When you have it all, all the boxes in the bottom-most list will show checks.
Click the button to create.
When the confirmation screen comes up, make sure you save the text of the initial password somewhere. In a couple of cases, people claim not to have got it, and it's easier to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. The auto-generated passwords are super-ugly! Beware.
