Reading comprehension strategies:
-
smart skimming - instead of reading a text linearly, scan though it to look for headings/subheadings/bolded words, anything that sticks out. It’s called smart because you control how fast or slow to read based on visual clues.
-
Question and critique – when you read something pause and ask yourself a set of question about what you just read (why was this important enough for the author to explain, how similar or different to something else I’ve read, how does it compare to what I already know about this). This is opposed to just re-reading things endlessly trying to remember them.
-
Abstract, apply, and attack – Abstract: Take something and extract general features of it. Apply: Take those concepts and use them in your own personal situations. Once you have applied it and formulated an understanding, deliberately look for counter arguments and assumptions.
Delivery Habits:
- Pause More: Pauses have a similar effect to paragraphs.
- Slow down to highlight: Slow down when you want information to land.
- Use declarative statements: Avoid speaking faster than you can think (avoid rambling).
- Finish one thought at a time
- Framework: Context, Core, and Connect: Context: Set the scene. Give people the why before the what. Core: Deliver the main idea clearly and simply. Connect: Show why it matters to them.
