Talking points for 2019 FIRST NAC meetings - quasics/quasics-frc-sw-2015 GitHub Wiki

  1. Introduce ourselves (names, hometown, team, and positions)
  2. "We're here on behalf of FIRST." a. Ask about familiarity with FIRST and provide some background as needed. b. Talk a little about our team, and how Scott got involved. c. Talk about our emphasis on outreach. Key example is our involvement with the Girl Scouts (describe briefly).
  3. Tie back to FIRST as a whole, and working on increasing number of STEM graduates, and in increasing diversity within that group.
    • For example, women from FIRST are 58% more likely to show interest in STEM; 93% more likely to pursue STEM careers; and 3.4x more likely to take an engineering course in their first year of college.
  4. Roll into ESSA: FIRST supports full funding of ESSA, and is particularly interested in Title IV, parts A and B, which provide opportunities for after-school robotics programs in schools (like ours), and helps 21st Century Community Learning Centers start similar programs.
    • Current funding in the House bill ~1.3B (each) for IV-A and IV-B
      • Co-sponsors: Lamb, Doyle. "What can we do to help continue moving this forward?
      • Not yet: Reschenthaler. "Can you help us to understand what were the obstacles to supporting the House bill?"
    • Senate: "Can we count on you for support to continue fund Title IV, Part A at or above the current $1.17 billion?"
  5. Coin Bill
    • Co-sponsors: Casey, Lamb, Doyle: "Thank you for your support."
    • Not yet: Toomey, Reschenthaler: "Can we count on you to join in co-sponsoring this bill?"
  6. Invitations
    • Talk about SCRA and Showdown
      • Showdown is happening on Saturday, Aug 3rd, and we would like to invite the (Senator|Rep.) or members of their staff to come join us, and to see some of the excitement for themselves.
    • Also talk about Pittsburgh Regional; date TBD, but being finalized, and expected to be set by August
    • We'd also like to invite you to visit our team at GHS.
    • With whom should follow up in order to try to get one of these on their schedule?
  7. General Notes
    • Reschenthaler's district includes Cal U
    • Doyle previously held a FIRST event with Daphne's help
    • Lamb is interested in holding a FIRST event like Doyle's, Daphne still wants to make that happen
