If you would like to discuss topics on our Kwakfriday, please add sections below for each discussion along with proposed time and agenda.

Event promotion message:

Dear Users of our beloved QGIS Project

This Friday is KwakFriday! What is KwakFriday you may be wondering to yourself? It is an initiative to replace the wonderful community meetups we used to hold every six months when times were different. Like our in-person meetings, the event is organised on a principle of self-organisation and community participation.

Giovanni Manghi (world renowned QGIS expert) and I will be hosting a 2 hour AMA (ask me anything) session on friday morning WET. You can find out more about it here:

https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/wiki/QHF-September-2020

The session will be recorded so if you can't watch live, you can still feel free to submit your QGIS brain teasers and burning questions for Giovanni to answer.

We really encourage others to follow our initiative, using the above wiki page to organise your plans (just add a section below our AMA one). You can host virtual meetups in the Jitsi room, plan your next steps to take QGIS further down the road to world domination and much much more. We encourage language and region specific huddles, documentation improvement sessions, bug fixing, making beautiful maps, and working together to do amazing things with QGIS.

Participants are kindly reminded to please read and observe our QGIS Code of Conduct and Diversity Statement to make these events a great experience for everyone!

We look forward to seeing you there!

QGIS AMA (Ask Me Anything)!!!

Stream leader: Tim Sutton, Giovanni Manghi

Video link: https://youtu.be/S_Av0zeW_XA

Time: 25 September 2020 10h00 UTC, duration 2 hours.

Background:

In this session we will answer any random QGIS questions! If you need us to work with a sample dataset please make sure to package it up nicely so we can test with it. Giovanni Manghi is a world-leading expert in the use of QGIS and has an encyclopedic knowledge of the QGIS issue tracker. If there is something you are struggling with and you are not sure if it is a bug or 'just you', he is the one to ask! Any questions relating to using QGIS and the QGIS project in general are welcome!

How to submit a question:

Questions

  • Can you explain what user profiles are for?
  • Can you give a quick example of how to build your own processing model?
  • Can you explain all this projection grid stuff that pops up when you open a layer?
  • Can you show all the new 3D stuff coming in the next release?
  • how to use geometry generator to draw the charts based on field values ?
  • Hi, is there any plan to create native custom style sharing option in QGIS? E.g. I have some styles others might appreciate and want make them available for others. There is the "QGIS Resource Sharing" plugin but might be useful to have this built-in natively... Thanks :-)
  • What's the recommended way to set defaults for the Map Composer? i.e. font and alignment for text boxes, parameters for the coordinate grid, fonts in the legend, scalebar settings etc. If this can be achieved by saving templates, then please elaborate...
  • Juan Carlos Bravo @Juanco_Bravo : Auto projection doesn’t always work, converting to WGS84 works most of the time but pseudomercator or other projections that use metric units (allowing elevation visualizing) don’t. Appreciate resources to help me resolve the issue. Q3.14 on MacOS. One dataset I struggle with: https://databasin.org/datasets/3dce4bb7978a4fbfbe2f8abb5e2b98c4

Giovanni: Dear Juan Carlos Bravo, reprojecting on the fly the linked dataset to EPSG 32212 and 3857 works fine here on QGIS 3.14 (Windows, Linux), what exactly is the problem you are getting on macOS?

  • Halo, how can I create polygons for existing buildings and walkways after importing a CSV file with lat-long-z ?? Thanks. I wanna produce a site survey sheet
  • Nguyen Tan Thai Hung @Hung_TT_Nguyen #QGIS wizards, how do I show coordinates with degree symbol and suffix, but without the minutes, on map axes? "Decimal with suffix" doesn't show the degree symbol, and "Degree, Minute with Suffix" shows the extra minutes value. I also tried "Custom", and in the dialogue I see to_dm() and to_dms() but nothing like to_degree().

Giovanni: Solution is to use "decimal with suffix" and "coordinate precision" equal to 0.

  • German Vargas: Is it possible to add custom Python code into a workstream created in the Graphic Modeler?
  • Geohub Nepal: how to solve this type of problems in QGIS: Where should the manufacturing plant be located to minimize overall transportation costs? Arcgis has solid sets of tools on location allocation problems.
  • César Herrera: My question is related to the simultaneous use of several people without having to use PostGis. I have verified that if several people open the same QGS / QGZ file, the program crashes. On the other hand, I think it is possible to have several identical QGS / QGZ files that call the same layers. In this case, the program does not close and allows multiple people to view the project. Is there any correct way to multiuser without actually using PostGis?
  • Hans van der Kwast In older QGIS versions we could choose output raster formats in the processing tools. Now the SAGA tools for example only outputs sdat. Was there a reason for this choice?
  • Luigi Pirelli I'm facing db table (from postgis) input in processing model and I can't have it as input to load in a project or to do other acion as layer
  • Geojuffie Is it possible to create a globe in QGIS which you can turn around?
  • Ismail Sunni is it possible to re-orientate the map view so that up is not North?
