I gave mains this year and it was my first attempt. I would not say that the GS1 was a tough kind of paper. It can be called a bit unexpected just like the 2017 Prelims. People generally start expecting a particular type of paper due to their own inclination or the coaching effect. And UPSC makes sure that such expectations are slashed. It gives a paper which is from the syllabus but defying what the majority were expecting.
