Do not compartmentalise preparation. Connect the dots. Prepare a topic and it could be asked in any of the GS paper, especially the blurred boundary between GS1 and GS3.
Analyse on your own whatever one reads. This is the most crucial part which i feel helped me a lot. This cant be substituted by any coaching and hence UPSC will always value it. It particularly makes sense for GS 1 as the syllabus is so vast. Thus best is to analyse/identify trends and keep them in mind.

Be thorough with NCERTs and books like Spectrum/Bipin Chandra and other standard sources. With every reading, one is bound to get new insights and patterns which could be asked by UPSC. Thus, stick to limited sources.
Read current affairs and also see them from the prism of GS syllabus. Eg. Juno mission. I used this article to answer the sustainable management of flood question in GS 1. Also, I utilized Digital India for the same question. Thus, interconnection and current affairs have become highly relevant in GS 1 also.
