How to get better broadband

The residents of rural Sandy, Oregon have been getting better, cheaper, broadband than most of the U.S. by following the old adage, "If you want something done right, do it yourself." The main article is up on Ars Technica, Where broadband is a utility, 100Mbps costs just $40 a month. Here's a video that puts a human face on the story: [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBztjr2uCzg&w=560&h=315]

It all began out of a need. The story we always tell is we couldn't get a DSL line in city hall, and this was back in 2001.

-- Joe Knapp, SandyNet General Manager I know this is the kind of thing those who are philosophically predisposed to rejecting solutions that involve government aren't going to like. But facts are facts. History is history. Private interests have had decades to provide broadband to rural America, and they've failed to do it -- even with government incentives whose terms were clearly not enforced at all. Maybe it's time to try something different.
