Air quality around the world

Found this little post from last year about a Shanghai Air Quality widget that uses U.S. State Department data. That got me thinking. Unknown to most of us, the U.S. State Department currently has a program to monitor air quality in several Chinese cities. It is actually a riff on the Environmental Protection Agency's AirNow program. In addition to CONUS (Continental United States), AirNow also keeps tabs on air quality in Canada. Here's the link to State Department's air quality report for Beijing: http://www.stateair.net/web/post/1/1.html Looking at this two questions come to mind: 1. Could the State Department start reporting air quality in other foreign nations where it posts diplomats, like South Carolina? 2. Now that China is the subject of regular air quality reporting by the U.S. government, how long before it becomes our 51st state?
