Looking at Firefox ESR

Firefox ESR, or Extended Support Release, is a special edition of Firefox "for use by organizations including schools, universities, businesses and others who need extended support for mass deployments." Given recent experience, I'm thinking that I might fall into the "and others" category. Once you get past the flowery prose and eye-catching chart in the FAQ, it begins to dawn that the almost weekly (sometimes more frequently) update rat-race you've been going through the last year or so really wasn't necessary after all -- and that you're not alone. The current ESR release is Firefox 10, and is expected to branch with Firefox 17 this November. Release 10 will continue to receive updates until February 2013, at which point ESR users would be expected to upgrade to the latest 17 release. The "standard" Firefox release cycle should be at around 18 or 19 by then. To download Firefox ESR 10, go to this link. Note that if you're on Red Hat Linux 6 or one of its downstream clones, you're already using a variant of the ESR 10 release (current Firefox on those platforms should be 10.0.10-1 with the latest security update).
