SOPA, Protect IP and the Apocalypse

Word from the UK Guardian is that the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) will be "shelved" in the U.S. House of Representatives. But Wednesday's protest action against the legislation is still on. The Guardian article credits Presidential opposition to the law, but anyone who has been following the issue knows that the White House has been late to the party and that supporters of the legislation were on the run already due to unprecedented push back from the Internet community. Although any tabling of the House bill would be welcome, most opponents remain wary -- especially because there has been no announced change in the proposed January 24 date for consideration of the companion Senate bill, called "Protect IP". Meanwhile plans by many Internet sites (including the English language section of Wikipedia) to conduct an all day black out this Wednesday in protest against these bills seem to still be on. Also on board for the 24 hour blackout is Mojang, publisher of the wildly popular Minecraft game. No Minecraft on Wednesday.
