Skype on RHEL 6

Very short post here, that says it all.

The steps are pretty straightforward:

1. Install required x86 packages (the only 64-bit packages are made for Ubuntu/Debian). I made sure I also had the 64-bit versions.

alsa-lib.i686 fontconfig.i686 freetype.i686 glib2.i686 libXScrnSaver.i686 libXi.i686 libXrandr.i686 libXrenderr.i686 libXvr.i686 libstdc++r.i686 pulseaudio-libsr.i686 qt.i686 qt-x11.i686

2. Get the latest tar.bz2 static build (as of this writing 2.2.0.25) from Skype and decompress it to /opt/skype.

3. Create symlinks:

ln -s /opt/skype/skype /usr/bin/skype ln -s /opt/skype /usr/share/skype

4. Copy the skype.desktop file to /usr/share/applications and one of the .png icon files (I used SkypeBlue_48×48.png) as “skype.png” to /usr/share/pixmaps.
