Perl and bioinformatics

Had a chance to read How Perl Saved the Human Genome Project by Lincoln Stein yesterday. About half way through I had this strong sense that this was something important. It’s a feeling I haven’t really had since that night over 13 years ago when I first picked up a copy of Jeffrey Friedl’s Mastering Regular Expressions (the book that really got me back into computing as a science). There’s what looks like a pretty extensive downloadable course, 1st Regional Training Course on Bioinformatics Applied to Tropical Diseases In Southeast Asia given in 2002 at Mahidol University in Thailand that looks interesting.

Now that I’ve had a day to reflect I’m thinking: yeah, this is it.
