Skype on CentOS 5.5 x86_64

I’ve got this running now, although my route to happiness was more circuitous than described in this or that post, whose superior wisdom I unhesitatingly acknowledge.

Basically this could be as easy as, “what he said”, but here’s my own variation on the recipes given above:

1. Download statically compiled Linux beta, wget -c "http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-beta-static".

2. Unarchive and move over to /opt/skype.

3. Symlink to /usr/share/skype and /usr/bin/skype, ln -s /opt/skype /usr/share/skype** and **ln -s /opt/skype/skype /usr/bin/skype.

4. Create a Gnome menu item for Skype.
