The underlying engineering teams are so good

The underlying engineering teams are so good, but the direction they got was so astonishingly bad that even they couldn’t succeed,” said Ellison. “Really great blogs do not take the place of great microprocessors. Great blogs do not replace great software. Lots and lots of blogs does not replace lots and lots of sales.

Larry Ellison, on good engineering, badly managed, at Sun. Gavin Clarke, Ellison slams former Sun CEO for blogginess in the UK’s Register (reporting on a Reuters interview with the software mogul).

Even those of us who positively loath Larry Ellison in every way possible have to admit one thing: getting laid off due to economic conditions is a lot less likely if you work for Oracle. Financial discipline and good business judgment are what those of us in the trenches need from our corporate leadership most of all. There are many “celebrity CEOs” (and wannabe celebrity CEOs) who don’t seem to get that. Neither, sadly, do their often hand-picked boards of directors.
