Dag has a terrific article on improved settings for the Windows based PuTTY terminal client entitled Improving Putty Settings on Windows.

The best advice he gives is to make whatever cosmetic and behavioral changes you want to the default profile first, so that you won’t have to customize subsequent profiles individually.
