Internet Radio with Rhythmbox

Rhythmbox is the standard music player application for the Gnome desktop environment that's installed by default on Red Hat and other Linux distros. While its primary purpose is to play back lists of songs stored on disk, Rhythmbox also allows you to bookmark podcasts and live stream links for Internet radio stations. Most Internet media streams require either Microsoft (Windows Media Player) or Apple (iTunes) software and are therefore inaccessible to those of us who use Linux as our primary desktop. Some use web based players that still require the underlying Microsoft or Apple (or in a decreasing number of cases, Real Media) applications. Since I use Linux on my personal desktop ("government sponsored" Scientific Linux, in fact), I've been on the lookout for streams I can play with Rhythmbox and other open source players using the gstreamer project framework (I like these because I can get reasonably-priced legal versions of popular codecs like mp3 for them from Fluendo). Most of these apps work best with .mp3 (also .pls) or .ogg (Windows Media Player can't work with these, due to Microsoft's religious aversion to free software) streams, although some (like Rhythmbox) can handle WPA (.aspx) feeds. Some places to find Internet radio listings: US Live Radio The Stream Center Shoutcast Live 365 Here are a few of the stations I added to the list: WCPE is a local classical station here in the NC Triangle. WUNC is our own local NPR (National Public Radio) station. Some other public radio stations are: WGBH Boston WNYC New York Air America Radio is gone now, but some local independent stations that carry the content it once provided are: WCPT Chicago WCHL Chapel Hill The BBC Internet Radio and Mobile Links page lists a number of interesting streams, including: BBC World Service provides 24 hour news/talk to the world.
