Fluendo plugins and SELinux

Put up a new Fedora 11 virtual machine today for testing and started supplementing with the usual 3rd party stuff for typical web browser. After copying Fluendo’s licensed gstreamer plugins for various proprietary formats, I fired up totem and got an alert from SELinux warning it prevented the plugins from loading because they were not authorized by the existing policy.

There’s a howto posted on the Fedora site, Installing the Fluendo MP3 Plugin, that covers this issue.

The fix in my case was to su to root and issue the command

chcon -t textrel_shlib_t '/usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstflump3dec.so'

Most on my systems on the inside of the firewall run with SELinux disabled. One of the purposes of this new vm is to help me understand the practical day-to-day impact of using various security technologies like SELinux in Enforcing mode, since this is the recommended configuration for both home and corporate systems.
