exporting/importing connections in Apache Directory Studio

By now anyone who reads this blog regularly knows that I’m a real fan of Apache Directory Studio. While there are still minor problems this tool, albeit mostly when running it on Windows,
it’s still a big improvement over anything else out there at any price (the Windows issues seem to revolve around problems handling paths that use long filenames, you know, like “My Documents”, which is so 90’s anyway…).

To export a connection or connections just go over to the Connections pane and highlight the desired connection objects by clicking on it (use cntrl-click for multiple objects). Then right click and select “Export.. Export Connections”. Fill out a file name (with .lbc file extension) and click “Finish”. On Windows you’ll need to specify a path without a long filename in it, say C:WINDOWStemp (hey, I’m not the one that made Windows the “standard”).

Importing is as easy as right clicking inside the Connections pane in another running copy of Apache Directory Studio and selecting “Import… Import Connections”. Even after you drill down to where the .lbc file is supposed to be you won’t be able to see it to select it, so just type in its name (e.g. “connections.lbc”) and click “Finish”.

Any connection objects with the same name as an existing object will conveniently be renamed to “Copy of…”

Although I would have preferred it if the output file was in some kind of plain text format (like an .xml), I’m not going to complain too vociferously. That, as they say, is life.
