Only a matter of hours now and it will have been exactly 40 years since Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the moon, with Armstrong shortly thereafter stepping off the LEM to become the first man to set foot on the lunar surface (at the time noted in the title above).

In commemoration NASA is streaming audio from mission radio in real time.

The link for that is here. There are also a number of other feaures up on the 40th anniversary pages at nasa.gov, including some restored video of Armstrong’s first step.

As I told my kids this morning, I watched all this from the back of the dining hall up at Boy Scout camp that summer, where a couple of hundred of us squinted and strained to make something out of the snowy black and white images on a small TV standing 20 or 30 feet away.
