Webcam brightness control on Linux

Just a few notes regarding this perennial problem for those of us struggling to live our daily lives sans Microsoft.

One of the tools I’ve found indispensable in troubleshooting webcam issues in the tried and true xawtv. Yes, it still has the same old cheesy open motif interface, but for the webcams it supports it gives you a graphical tool to make fine adjustments to things like brightness, contrast and color.

Since the number one complaint regarding Linux webcams is that by default the picture is too dark, this is probably the thing most people will want to adjust. On the xawtv Options menu, which is invoked by right-clicking on the image window, this can be adjusted using the “Exposure” slide control.
