Ubuntu Survey

I’ll let this speak for itself. The survey, released a couple of days ago, focused on Ubuntu as a server platform. With just over 6,800 responses it apparently carries a lot of weight with those who do the survey thing for a living.

Windows continues to dominate in sheer numbers across the spectrum from small to large enterprises, showing that Microsoft’s decision to split their server and desktop offerings into distinct products was a wise move (something many of us had been urging back in the NT 5.0 days). Linux comes in a clear second, outnumbering the commercial Unices as well as midrange (e.g. AS400) and mainframe systems. In the Linux category, Ubuntu is demonstrated to have pulled far ahead of previous corporate favorites like Novell and Red Hat.

Although I expected to see Ubuntu do well (it has been building a following beyond the desktop crowd among serious enterprise sysadmins for a couple of years — consistently showing up as the demo system of choice at meetings of the Red Hat hosted Triangle Linux User’s Group here in Raleigh), I was surprised to see CentOS, the Red Hat clone, with a large percentage of deployments. Another interesting bit of information was that among LDAP directory servers Oracle’s OID is now ahead of Novell NDS, with Sun trailing far behind. The prevalence of OpenLDAP in smaller shops was less phenomenal, given the high cost of the previously mentioned commercial offerings.
