BSOD in VMware

I’ve only seen the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) of a Windows machine inside VMware once before tonight. That time it actually took me a few minutes to realize what had happened. All I recall seeing was a momentary flash of blue and then a reboot of the VM. This time around, although I almost immediately realized what had happened, it still struck me as truly weird. It also helped that it was a full STOP error (in the Linux world known as a kernel PANIC), so the Bluescreen was frozen in the VM window for me to see.

A completely virtual system throws a STOP error with the familiar IRQ_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL characteristic of a hardware device driver problem. Now that’s something. You know you’ve been running Linux too long when you begin to see such things as … inconvenient.

Proof once again that no matter what hardware you throw at Windows, you always have a better than equal chance that the O/S will find some incompatibility providing it with an excuse to cause you pain.
