Blubuntu
UPDATE: _I’ve actually backed out of this theme by reinstalling Human, but have kept the cool blue login splash and deep sky blue desktop background. Instead of Human I’ve applied Gnome’s Glossy theme (as recommended by Jason Rowe, see below). Looks pretty sharp to me. Would love to re-enabled Normal Visual Effects, which gave me some trouble under Human, but they continue to annoy by making it impossible to take complete screenshots (title bars become invisible). If you want just the artwork for gdm and the background, just install the following packages:
blubuntu-session-splashes
blubuntu-wallpapers
blubuntu-gdm-theme_
Come on, who doesn’t hate Ubuntu’s default Human theme? Well, hate is probably too strong a word.
Anyway, coming from the true _Blue_curve world of Red Hat distros, I found that just about the only thing I didn’t like about Ubuntu was all that brown on my screen. It’s not that I don’t like brown as a color. In fact I actually kind of like it. For clothing (I always had at least one brown suit — for motion days), for shoes (to go with my dark navy blue suit, like Jimmy Carter — only my ties were always more tastefully matched). Even for a pistol holster (I always carried my little Model 36 in a light brown pancake). But on my terminal screen? Nah.
There is hope for those like me though. It’s called Blubuntu. It’s an unofficial theme from back in the 6.x days that’s so unsupported by Canonical that it’s impossible to install through Synaptic right now To get it on my latest Intrepid Ibex (8.10) build, I had to do the command-line thing:
`
sudo apt-get install blubuntu-look blubuntu-theme
gtk2-engines-ubuntulooks
`
You select the new theme through System… Preferences … Appearance… Theme. To get the login screen to use the same theme, go to System… Adminstration… Login Window … Local.
For an alternative to the unofficial Blubuntu, you can look at Jason Rowe’s custom alternative, which is another kind of “variation in blue” for those in search of a non-”human” look.
