Bug bites: Ubuntu and non-automouting usb devices

This appears to be a bug that most are blaming on the latest kernel update. I’m running 8.04 LTS on the desktop and have been bitten by it. Basically the problem is that devices connected through a usb hub (in my case the Dell 19” LCD monitor sitting on my desk at home) are no longer detected when plugged in. Running lsusb seems to force the system to re-read the bus and your device then gets picked up. I’ve been able to reproduce the problem repeatedly. Weird thing is that I thought I was running the latest kernel, but then made the mistake of compiling in kqemu support.

Ugh. Dumb move.

The question now is, does this infect 32-bit as well as 64-bit? And why is my completely up-to-date T61 not have this problem?

Inquiring minds want to know…

Postscript: After seeing the unresponsiveness of the project to this bug, I’ve moved my desktop up to x86_64 Ubuntu 8.10, and taken the latest updates without experiencing this problem. Looks like I’m off 8.04 permanently now. So much for “Long Term Support”.
