Java archives
Just added this link to my Tech Links that appear in the right sidebar on this site, but wanted to put something in that would be searchable.
One of my pet peeves is the seemingly insane insistence of software vendors on developing product with a specific version of Sun’s Java SDK and then only upgrading at a glacier’s pace, even in the face of security and functional problems that newer versions resolve.
There’s one product from Oracle that still requires Java 1.4.2_15, which is the version it was developed and ran on back before Oracle gobbled up the company that originally developed it.
In the game of musical versions, one place you can go to get “just the right version”, is Sun’s Java archives page.
As someone pointed out to me (more than once) the problem with vendors tying you to so many different specific versions is that “a bytecode binary will work - it is when you recompile that you break things.” To which my latest reply was, “which is the whole point of using a JDK - Java Development Kit.”
