Sun should go back to being a hardware company

The Register has a characteristically profanity-laced post today whose title just screamed out, “Read me! Read me!”:

Sun may or may not be about to obliterate Oracle and Microsoft

It’s actually a serious topic. Sun’s Rock processor could change the data center computing landscape, and when matched with their now solely-owned MySQL database (which is not a profit center, and probably never will be) could give Oracle and Microsoft a run for their money. Or at least make them begin recommending Sun’s hardware again. Which will actually wind up hurting HP and IBM more in the long run. Oracle and Microsoft don’t make hardware, but their products do help sell it. Really big hardware, especially for Oracle.

Two things stand in Sun’s way:

1. CEO Jonathan “What was his claim to fame anyway?” Schwartz’s continued effort to reposition them as a software company.

2. Their consequent diminishing of hardware engineering capability and political power within the company of the hardware team.

Without thinking much about it my first reaction was:

1. Fire Schwartz.

2. Replace him with Mark Tremblay.

Right now that’s where I’m going to plant my flag.
