Mark Minasi's Windows Networking Tech Page

I started out as a Windows admin, moved on to work as a desktop engineer and then jumped horizontally over into Identity Management, mostly platformed on Unix systems (first Solaris, later Red Hat). Although I’ve never “looked back”, there have been many times when “looking across” has been necessary — even beneficial. As my next big project is starting, an enterprise deployment of Oracle Identity Manager platformed on Windows Server, into my inbox comes the long-delayed edition of Mark Minasi’s latest newsletter.

Mark Minasi is probably the single best writer on Windows out there today. His thick tomes on Windows Server have been the standard reference for up-and-coming admins for years. The most current volume is Mastering Windows Server 2003. Two new books on core technologies and networking in Windows Server 2008 are due out in September of this year. One of the books I most recommend to Windows types coming over to Linux and/or Unix is his Linux for Windows Administrators. It’s the book I wish I’d had when starting out.

This month’s newsletter has lots of good stuff in it, not the least of which is a neat little feature entitled “Your IT Resume in 2008” by Windows scripting guru Don Jones. There’s much good advice there, learned the hard way by many of us, and well worth taking the time to read. No matter how many years you’ve been in the field, no matter how settled (safe?) in your current job, one thing about tech that never changes is you never know.
