ARCHIVELOG Mode

Backing up Oracle’s Application Server components, including the Identity Management stack, involves both archiving the physical configuration files (many, many .xml extension files compressed into a jar file and then indexed using an embedded db manager) and backing up the Oracle metadata repository database.

Before you can do this, the database must be in ARCHIVELOG mode.

This can be set inside the database EM console (emctl start dbconsole) by logging in and clicking Maintenance… Configure Recovery Settings and then checking the ARCHIVELOG Mode box. Hitting “Apply” will result in a database restart to update things properly.

To check whether a database is in ARCHIVELOG mode, sqlplus in and issue the following query:

select log_mode from v$database

If it’s in ARCHIVELOG mode, it will return:

LOG MODE \-------------------- ARCHIVELOG
