More Notes on the 64-bit Linux Desktop

While I’m still learning more and more every day about running a 64-bit (CentOS) Linux desktop, one of the first things I did was to install the 32-bit version of Firefox 2 (upgraded to v3 Beta 5 today) so I could run all the 32-bit versions of the various plugins I use regularly, like Flash, Real Player, and yes, even Sun’s Java plugin.

I had previously tried the nspluginwrapper solution, but frankly found it a bit of a kludge. Fortunately for me, CentOS’s 64-bit rebuild of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.1 is every bit as easy to install most 3rd party software on as it’s upstream cousin. While I haven’t yet built anything from source on it (the adventure has just begun), I have taken tarred up copies of software previously compiled in a 32-bit environment (e.g. StarPlot, XEphem) and run them without any problem.
