Improving Firefox Stability

Like many others, I have had my share of instability in sessions with the Mozilla Firefox browser the last few months. Prior to December of last year I have only occasionally experienced browser crashes on Linux, and none on Windows.

Coincident with a number of incremental browser upgrades that were published beginning in December, I began experiencing repeated crashes on most of the Linux machines running at home, and, less frequently, one at work.

After deleting the affected user profiles (.mozilla directory), I tried a succession of upgrades using the latest stable tarball for Linux. The crashes persisted.

Finally, I removed all plugins except for Adobe Flash, which is really not optional given that most commercial sites cannot be comfortably viewed without it. This tactic appears to have improved things considerably.

Now if I could just get at least the part of the Internet I use to abandon Flash content …
