Crashing X on CentOS with Google Earth

Apart from the normal daily surprise Firefox crashes (which aren’t really a surprise any more because I’ve come to expect them), Google Earth decided to start crashing X on my nVidia equipped CentOS workstation lately.

This was very annoying. A little Googling gave me a fix that worked.

Basically, it’s the same old copy an old (different) copy of a library file into the program directory trick.

Here’s the post that put me on to it.

All I did was download the library and put it in my /opt/google-earth directory. Didn’t make any of the other suggested changes.

Still unsure of the details, but near as I can tell the libGL.so.1 on my system (either in /usr/lib or someplace else), isn’t what the app wants — or can’t be read.
