Department of One -> Department of None

This kind of symbolizes how I’ve been feeling lately about the potentially career-limiting mix of increasing demands and clearly inadequate resourcing of IT projects that most of us have been experiencing the last few years.

Meanwhile, further bureaucratization through implementation of standards like ITIL reduce efficiency by increasing administrative burdens on individual contributors. At the same time, decision-makers within IT are diverted from their core responsibility for managing the details of technology by sending them off to endless seminars and trainings. where they pour over PowerPoint presentations and are indoctrinated with the latest business psychobabble.

We’ve reached, or are about to reach, a turning point, I think. There are many highly paid and highly skilled IT pros who are about ready to throw in the towel and direct their considerable intellectual energy elsewhere. The use of offshoring or outsourcing as an end game strategy for further reducing costs (the real plan) or a backstop against short-term shortages of available talent (what they tell you they’re doing), is only accelerating this process.

For every cause there is an effect.
