Why do you document all this stuff on your blog, instead of at work?

Mainly because I’m one of those few who believe in “sharing the wealth” of whatever little knowledge I’ve built up on this stuff. Also because the extensive doc I have done for work over the last 7 years never gets read by anyone there — mostly because in almost every functional area we’ve got a bench “one deep”, so no one has the time to look at anything not directly related to the fires they’re assigned to fight. There’s also the little matter of my company (like too many others) not having a coherent strategy for documenting things. There’s no central repository of tech doc, in fact there isn’t even a place to host one. They’ve made an effort to put up a MS SharePoint site for some big projects, but SharePoint has lots of limitations — not the least of which is that no one at work really understands how it works, so they can’t even set security on select pages or transfer data between back-ends.

So there you go.
