CA SiteMinder on Red Hat Enterprise 5 - NOT

Getting CA (formerly Netegrity) SiteMinder to work on Red Hat Enterprise 4 was hard enough. Although you can get specific revs of the WebAgent installed using a custom build of Apache from source (wasting a perfectly good native Apache install — which takes alot of work to replicate from source), forget about the Policy Server.

Thought I’d try my hand at installing the SDK today on my RHEL 5 workstation, really just to snoop around the Perl stuff included.

[root@eldapo smsdk]# ./nete-sdk* Preparing to install... Extracting the JRE from the installer archive... Unpacking the JRE... Extracting the installation resources from the installer archive... Configuring the installer for this system's environment... awk: error while loading shared libraries: libdl.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory dirname: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory /bin/ls: error while loading shared libraries: librt.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory basename: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory dirname: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory basename: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory hostname: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Launching installer... grep: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory /tmp/install.dir.25085/Linux/resource/jre/bin/java: error while loading shared libraries: libpthread.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Of course I’ve got all the compat libs installed, including libc.so.6, etc. So the problem is with CA’s crummy installer not understanding the Linux OS.

I remember being in one of those pre-sales technical meetings over at CA in Islandia a couple of years ago, which we were actually having after buying a bunch of CA stuff (don’t ask). When I asked the various sales reps and engineers (actually the salespeople outnumbered the engineers by 5 to 2) whether they had many clients running Red Hat on the back-end, they all laughed. At which point my manager asked what other customers were running. Their answer, with an all-knowing wink, was “Windows”. My manger, a Sun Solaris fan, and I just looked at each other and shook our heads. This was not going to be any fun.

So here’s the deal. SiteMinder has always had uneven support for RHEL, and Linux in general. My guess is alot of Netegrity’s customers that were on Linux moved off SiteMinder long before CA bought them. Given that Sun also had a Linux-unfriendly attitude (and I think still does), that explains why so many companies have flocked to Oracle — just like mine has. The good news for me is that within another couple of years SiteMinder will be a thing of the past on my job.
