Life Beyond LDAP

One big change that’s been happening at work is I’ve finally gotten a designated “apprentice” to train to do my LDAP job when I go on sabbatical this summer (in keeping with the saying “two there are always, a master and his apprentice”). As a practical matter this means I should begin having time to do more non LDAP stuff as summer draws near. One of the areas I’m interested in pursuing is system security, and right now I’m looking around for some security training courses. The Red Hat class, emphasizing as it does hands on configuration, is a good possibility. I’ve been spending more time with the server consolidation team lately, yapping about our nascent Linux infrastructure, so there is a practical benefit to my employer. Another area I’m going to be spending more time on is source control for our internal admin applications like Perl and shell scripts. The new monitoring guy has put up a cvs tree and we’re now getting all the sysadmins in the department to contribute their code, wherever it might happen to be. I’ll be configuring a webcvs front end for it soon, to make it easier to browse the code base.
