Sun Directory 5.1 SP2 on FreeBSD 5.2.1

Well, not quite. I have finally managed to get the Directory Console to install and run, though. This is a good thing on many levels, not the least of which is I finally can run it on a stable platform for day to day management tasks. Sure, it still goes all “smeary” sometimes, but, I’ve noticed that the GUI actually seems to snap back quicker than on Windows — much like it does when running it on Solaris/Sparc.

The big challenge is still to get something working on Red Hat Enterprise 3 (maybe 4, by the time my company takes the plunge). So far I haven’t had any luck getting the Sun Admin Server to install cleanly, although ns-slapd does work. Problem there is that directory operations are now so tied up with the GUI that the Admin Server is a must-have. I did get a response to my post on the Sun Developer Forum that led me to a patch, but have not yet had the time to test it.

My hope is that Red Hat itself gets an open sourced edition of the Netscape Directory server out the door sooner than later. Assuming it passed my internal quality testing, I’d be inclined to recommend that as a solution going forward. Not that I’ll abandon experimenting with OpenLDAP, which I continue to believe will be the long term winner so long as they stay on the track they’ve been on (simple and truly lightweight, rather than complex and bloated).
