Discord Usage - pennyworth12345/A3_MMSI GitHub Wiki
The introduction of Discord has been a welcome addition to the many ways addon makers can communicate, share knowledge, and troubleshoot problems. If you've never used Discord before, the initial experience of joining the main Arma 3 Discord can be overwhelming but know that the channels are separated into sections to better facilitate discussion and getting help for specific issues. General helpful information can be found in the #info_help_tips
channel.
Here are some general tips I'd like to offer for use of the Arma 3 Discord:
- Use Discord's markdown to emphasize points and make the code more readable.
- Don't ask to ask, just ask. While it might seem polite to say hello and see if someone is around before asking your question, it can result in the worst case of getting no response at all, and the best case now you have to ask the question anyway.
- Avoid posting large blocks of code or configs directly into channels, instead use text sharing sites like Pastebin, and then post a link to it once you've uploaded it.
- Try not to read into or take offense to people's responses. English is not the first language of a large portion of the Discord's users, as such, things can get lost in translation and come off harsher than the author intended. Maybe you caught that person on a bad day, or maybe they're generally unpleasant, don't let it deter you from what's otherwise a great resource. If you really have an issue with another user just ignore them, or use Discord's block feature.
- Chat can move fast and questions can get missed. Especially if you ask something while a conversation is already going in that channel. Don't take offense to getting no response, try again later when things quiet down. Maybe you're posting at an hour where a majority of the knowledgeable users are asleep, and by the time they're online, the chat has scrolled past your question. Also, consider if you're asking a question that's too specific to a mod or program.
- If you ask a question and later figure out what the problem was yourself, please list what the solution was. This allows others to learn from your experience and the next time a similar question comes along, they can help point people in the right direction.
- Sometimes it's easier to post more long or complicated questions to the Arma 3 Forums, especially if you need to include a lot of links to images or configs. You can then link to the forum post in Discord, and that'll allow people to catch up easily with what the current status is and what you've already tried, without you having to restate yourself over and over.
