The text formats that can be uploaded and annotated in Recogito are:

• .txt: This is the simplest text format and can be read and produced by all popular text editors. It is sometimes referred to as “Plain text”. If your text file is not in .txt format, you need to convert it using the “Save as”, “Export” or “Download as” options in the text editor of your choice. If you experience difficulties uploading a .txt file to Recogito, make sure that you selected UTF8 as encoding format when exporting the file, especially if you are using Microsoft Word or working on a Mac.

• TEI-XML: The latest version of Recogito now enables the import of documents in TEI-XML, though work still needs to be done to ensure the retention of existing tags. Any text annotated in Recogito, including those in .txt, can also be downloaded as TEI-XML; we will discuss this in the section about downloading options available for text documents.

• Tabular data: You can also upload and annotate tabular data in Recogito, so long as they:

  • are in comma separated values (CSV) format;
  • have a dedicated column for place-names.
