Recogito Tutorial: Base Maps - pelagios/pelagios.github.io GitHub Wiki

There are four different background options in the map view, and you can easily switch from one to the other by using the icon on the top right corner.

  • Empty basemap: this is the default option available in the map view. It relies on the base maps produced and shared by the Ancient World Mapping Centre, and are specific to the geography of the ancient world.
  • Ancient Places: this base map was developed along with the Digital Atlas of the Roman Empire (DARE), and shows locations and latin names of settlements in the Roman Empire, as well as roads and aqueducts. This information is superimposed on a physical representation of the terrain.
  • Modern Places: this base map relies on Open Street Maps, a crowd-sourced modern map, showing all contemporary features, all labelled.
  • Aerial: this base map uses contemporary satellite imagery from Mapbox. It has quite high resolution, and no labels for places or features.

These last two base maps (“Modern Places” and “Aerial”) enable you to visualise annotations at a higher granularity. For example, if you are annotating documents that refer to buildings within a specific city, such as Pompeii or Early Modern London.
